Hospitalist imageWhat are Pediatric Hospitalists?

Pediatric Hospitalists are pediatricians that specialize in and primarily practice in the hospital setting. Pediatric Hospitalists work with your pediatrician and other providers and physicians involved in your child’s care. If your pediatrician suggests that your child receive care from a Pediatric Hospitalist, you can be assured that your child will receive the same high quality care that you receive from your pediatrician and that the hospitalist will be working very closely with your child’s regular physician. The pediatric hospitalist will work to care for your child in a way that is reassuring, comfortable and of the highest standards and quality.

Why have Pediatric Hospitalists in our Community Hospital?

There is a growing trend nationally for physicians to either be community based or hospital based. In July of 2006 the pediatricians of Leesburg Regional Medical Center asked the hospital to work with them to develop a hospitalist model of care for our community. From a time and service perspective the pediatrician can not be in the office and in the hospital at the same time. If there is an urgent need at the hospital, they have to respond to that patient and scheduled office visits must wait. If there is a non-urgent need at the hospital, the pediatrician responds before office hours, during their lunch break or after office hours. During busy times, the pediatrician is juggling hospital patients, emergency patients, office visits and often has on-call responsibility to their office patients and to the hospital after hours and on weekends.

How were the Pediatric Hospitalists Selected?

Leesburg Regional Medical Center worked with the Pediatricians on our medical staff and evaluated many options to have a pediatric hospitalist model. The physicians are highly qualified pediatricians and were interviewed by both the hospital administration and Pediatricians in our community. Our desire was to have a seamless process to transition patients from the community into the hospital and back to their pediatrician or provider of care.

Will my Pediatrician know my child or newborn is receiving care in the Hospital?

Yes, not only will they know your child or newborn is in the hospital, communication will occur at the time of admission, during the stay and before discharge as needed to insure comprehensive and high quality of care delivery. Our Pediatricians in the community and the Hospitalists will work very closely together.

Do the Hospitalists have offices to see children outside of the hospital?

No, the Hospitalists work in the hospital and are readily available to spend time with patients and their families and to coordinate in-hospital care and treatment.

Will I see my pediatrician while my child or newborn is in the hospital?

Generally not, your pediatrician will be attending to his or her patients that are in the community and working with the Hospitalists to plan for your child’s needs following discharge from the hospital. Again, your primary physician will be kept informed of your child’s progress throughout the hospital stay.

What if my Pediatrician does not practice at Leesburg Regional Medical Center?

The Hospitalists on our staff will provide excellent care to all newborn and pediatric patients admitted to their care. Any Pediatrician can contact the Hospitalists to arrange for a direct admission of a patient to their care. Patients can also be admitted as needed from our Emergency Department.

What if my child is admitted to the hospital and I do not have a Pediatrician?

When your child is ready for discharge, we will insure that you have a planned follow-up appointment for care and that we are communicating with that physician. This may be a pediatrician, a family practice physician or a specialist, depending upon your child or newborn’s specific needs.

Leesburg Regional Medical Center and our Pediatricians on staff are proud to be able to offer this service to our patients. We have worked diligently to insure an excellent and well coordinated model of care that maximizes patient, family, physician and employee satisfaction. We are confident in our ability to meet your needs.
